A Visit From Dad

2010 Mileage: 2911

A great, but way too short visit from my dad just ended. He came in to town yesterday afternoon and left a few hours ago. It was great to see him and I was sad to see him go. I'm already looking forward to his next trip out in August and the dinner we scheduled for Peter Luger steakhouse on that trip.

A Different Kind Of Workout

2010 Mileage: 2885

For the last five days my only riding has been my daily commute and my after work ritual has consisted way too much of a few beers to wind down and not enough heading to the park. Not having a road bike has been my excuse although the multitude of other bikes I have to ride (including a touring bike) doesn't make it a good one. I am posting at one in the morning so I'm sure it's not going to happen tomorrow but hopefully Wednesday I'll be able to make a Piermont run before work.

I did however get a pretty good workout in tonight playing soccer in a league with a bunch of Lindsay's co-workers in Chinatown. The touch is a little lacking (although not as bad as i expected) and the few shots I took weren't even close to on target but it was a great time regardless. The team won rather handily and I got in a great workout off the bike. I need to start doing some running and not have all my workouts on the bike, which is something I've been realizing for a while but this just really drove the point home. A whole different group of muscles than I've felt in a couple years are going to be sore tomorrow.

Allamuchy

2010 Mileage: 2825

Yesterday afternoon I met up with Ian and Nick (both also bike shop employees) and we piled in to Nick's Mini Cooper for the drive out to the Allamuchy trail. We got there and I took one look up the first climb and could tell I was way undergunned riding a hardtail with an 80mm travel front fork. Nick was on a 6inch travel bike and that made a lot more sense for this place. Rock gardens now have a whole new meaning. I spent the next two hours getting tossed around and muscling my way through some incredibly technical singletrack. I only supermanned (or did a Pete Rose as Ian called it) over the bars once and as the ride went on I could feel myself getting more comfortable on the bike and with the terrain. It was a blast and made me miss my regular rides at Pontiac Lake that much more. I also forgot a little bit how completely different of a workout mountain biking can be.

After the ride I got home and Lindsay had dinner on the table. I have an amazing wife. Then I took a much needed shower and Linz and I went to Rockwood to meet some friends and watch our friend and my co-worker Mike Frensley play. Mike put on a great show and the beer I was drinking helped to kill the pain that had set in pretty bad on the drive back to the city after the ride. Mike is an awesome singer/songwriter and you can check him out/pick up a CD here.

Getting Off The Road

2010 Mileage: 2808

I'm meeting with a few guys from the shop this afternoon to drive out of the city and go hit some singletrack for the first time in over a year. It will also be the first time out on the Ferrous. It should be a good time and I'm really excited (and a bit nervous although it's hard to admit that). Regardless it will be great to get away from the city somewhere other than riding up 9w.

I'm Married!

2010 Mileage: 2782

Well a lot has happened since I last posted and I realize I am a terrible blogger. I set off on a ride to South Carolina from New York about a month ago and made it about 500 miles in for days before the stomach bacteria I caught early in the ride caught up with me and forced us to call it quits half way through North Carolina. It was fun and a great bonding experience with Per and Luca even though I was hurting pretty bad.

We got picked up by my dad and got down to Daufuskie Island, South Carolina a couple days early to give me time to recover and I was finally feeling better by the wedding day. It was an amazing time and I am now married to an amazing woman and the love of my life. You can check out some of our photographer's pictures here. I hope everyone there enjoyed themselves as much as I did. Below is my favorite picture, and I'm sure you can guess why (and yes we did ride the tandem if you weren't there).
The wedding was then followed by five nights in Cap Cana at Secret's Sanctuary and it was an incredible (and much needed) getaway. I usually am not one to sit around and do nothing by the pool but it was really quite nice. We ate good meals, I read lots of books and we got to know the bartenders at the swim up bar pretty well. It was a gorgeous and relaxing place and I won't be surprised if we head back in the future. We did head out on one little adventure of snorkeling with sharks and sting rays followed by a booze cruise. I'll post pictures of it when they are developed.
Now I've been back to the real world fand the bike shop for over a week. Married life is great (although not much different) and I know that I'm a lucky man to have such an amazing wife who puts up with an apartment full of bikes (there are currently seven in here). I am gonna really need to kick up the mileage if I'm gonna reach my goal so we'll see what happens but after the crazy month I just went through figuring all that out is one of the last things on my mind. Thanks for reading and I am gonna try to be a better blogger.
